North Wales

This year is the year of adventure in Wales, and the top end delivers with the beautiful, rugged Snowdonia National Park and towering Mt Snowdon. They are loved by hikers, climbers, kayakers and serious adventurers, but rest assured that there are less extreme pursuits in the foothills. Head to Llyn Peninsula for watersports and wild beaches; head to Anglesey for castles, country houses and its very own beaches. Don’t miss the northern bustling holiday towns of Conwy and Llandudno, or wacky Portmeirion, an Italianate ‘model’ village, on the west coast. Check out this family adventure itinerary.

South Wales

South Wales offers some of the best walking in Britain (in the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park for instance). And there are miles of mountain biking trails, natural white water for rafting and canoeing, some of Britain’s best surf (around the rugged coastline) – and even legendary bog-snorkelling. Base yourself in Abergavenny, a city devoured by foodies, which even has a food festival every September. Carmarthenshire, in the west, offers delightful food and scenery too. Check out this romantic itinerary.

Cardiff is a fun city — famous for its iconic Principality Stadium sports facility, family attractions, nightlife, culture, shopping and food. The Cardiff dining scene is mega and American food is all the rage right now with pop-up eateries, smoke houses, diners, wild west pizzas. (Americans will feel right at home.) Local Welsh specialties are also on the menu in a wide range of cafes, bars, restaurants and gastro pubs with Welsh beers including Brains, Felinfoel and Rhymney. You’ll also find top class waterside entertainment and dining at Cardiff Bay and the Wales Millennium Centre. Hands-on science offers family fun at Techniquest (with 130 or so interactive exhibits), while the Dr Who Experience Centre offers the chance to join The Doctor in a mini episode of Doctor Who. Night and day, rain and shine — there’s plenty to experience. Check out this shopping itinerary.
