Ascending the 130-odd steps to the top of this 600-year-old clock tower (a remnant of the city’s original walls) is a memorable experience and a Bern highlight. On clear days, the views stretching out all the way to the Alps are nothing short of heavenly.
The only way to climb the tower is to take a trilingual 50-minute guided tour, run by the city’s tourist information service from April to October. Reservations are strongly advised.
If you don’t fancy the climb or spending any money, stay at ground level and join the crowds who gather outside to watch the clock’s revolving figurines at precisely four minutes before the hour.
