This peaceful park, immediately west of Tiananmen Gate, makes a refreshing prologue or conclusion to the magnificence of the Forbidden City.
Formerly a sacred Ming-style Altar to the God of the Land and the God of Grain, this was where the emperor would offer sacrifices. The square altar remains, bordered on all sides by walls tiled in various different colours.
The northeastern exit of the park comes out beside the Forbidden City moat from where you can enter the Forbidden City, through Meridian Gate, or cross in front of the Forbidden City to reach the little-visited Workers Cultural Palace. The south exit brings you out close to Tiananmen Square.
