After a time of drought, York again had a brewery of its own when the York Brewery opened in 1996.
A small brewery with a 20 barrel brew plant and a selection of five different beers, the brewery itself has a tap room to try the products and provides guided tours of the premises. (Four times a day followed by tasters.)
Visitors are given an account of the brewing process and view the plant from specially constructed galleries.
There is also a shop with various souvenir items. (There is a further gift shop at 10 Stonegate with a pub called The Yorkshire Terrier.) The tap room is open from noon till 9pm.
The brewery has three of its own pubs around the city, including the Last Drop Inn round the corner from the Shambles, The Three Legged Mare near the Minster and Yorkshire Terrier (in Stonegate). Their Yorkshire Terrier beer has won awards and has a growing band of loyal fans.
