If you’re an art buff, you can spend hours getting lost in the elegant Yellowstone Art Museum in downtown Billings. The museum touts the largest collection of “progressive” Northern Rockies and Northern Plains art anywhere, including the works of renowned 1800s Montana painter Charles M. Russell and the largest Will James collection in the world. The Montana Collection has nearly 2,000 works showcasing the contemporary West. Just to show its diversity, the museum also showcases the Poindexter Collection of New York Abstract Expressionist Art.
From its modest beginnings a half-century ago, the Yellowstone Art Museum’s collection has grown to nearly 7,500 pieces of art and archival works. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday year-round. If you can make it on the first Saturday of each month, admission is a mere $1.
