Yaowarat Road is the heart of Chinatown in Bangkok and a must-see for anyone who wants to immerse him or herself in Chinese culture. It’s bustling all the time. The street is lined with traditional Chinese pharmacies that sell herbal and medicinal remedies, gold shops, and dim sum parlors. There are some good hotels here, including Shanghai Mansion, which used to be an opera house. The night food market with street-side stalls is famous for Chinese-Thai seafood.
Visitors who wander down the alleys and roads that intersect Yaowarat will find small shops selling herbs, teas, fruit and vegetables from China, housewares and cooking gear. There are also Chinese temples and shrines tucked away in the myriad nooks and crannies among the beautiful 19th-century shophouses.
