Willamette River

Winding through the heart of Portland

The Willamette River divides Portland into east and west, and is crossed by 10 bridges in the city. The river is a terrific recreational resource for boating, kayaking and, lately, stand up paddleboarding. Organizations such as the Willamette Riverkeepers, are working to restore the river’s cleanliness, habitat and environment.

The river was an important transportation route throughout much of the early history of the state, furnishing a means of conveying the state’s vast timber and agricultural products to the outside world.
