Just outside Glacier National Park, the little town of Whitefish snuggles below Big Mountain. But it’s no sleepy Montana cow town. In fact, it hops with activity, especially in summer and winter.
Summer packs out town with spillover visitors from Glacier. It also attracts those who want water fun on Whitefish Lake. You can boat, kayak, canoe, fish, and swim. Above town, Whitefish Mountain Resort has hiking, mountain biking, scenic lift rides, and family recreation. Surrounding town, a lengthy trail system tours the forest for hikers and mountain bikers.
By winter, Whitefish returns to its ski town roots. Free buses cart skiers and snowboarders from town to ski resort. At the resort, lifts access runs on all sides of Big Mountain.
This resort town centers around a few blocks loaded with restaurants, small shops, and bars with nightlife. In addition, the locale contains a generous helping of hotels, lodges, and B&Bs.
To reach town from I-90, take Highway 93 north for 2.5 hours. For flying, the nearest airport is in Kalispell (FCA), about 20 minutes southeast.
