When the summer’s 120-degree heat bakes you to a toasty, dry crisp, take refuge in the green grass and gurgling streams of the White Mountains, an area that encompasses the Northern Arizona communities of Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, Snowflake, Taylor, Springerville, Eager and St. Johns. Rent a cabin or set up camp. This scenic landscape is great for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting and more.
If you’re looking for a little “civilization” while you’re roughing it, head into town to visit the antique stores and restaurants of the Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside area. Or, visit Greer, one of my favorite small towns in Arizona.
Want to introduce your kids to that wet, cold white stuff called snow? Bring them to the White Mountains to sled, ski or build snowmen. (Don’t forget the extra hat and carrot for the nose!)
