The Whale Museum, opened to the public in 1979 as the first museum in the country devoted to a species living in the wild. Today, the museum continues to promote stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. There are two floors to explore.
The Gallery of Whales is a collection of exhibits, artwork, models, and artifacts, including real whale skeletons and a family tree of the Resident orcas.
On the first floor, is the gift shop as well as the newest exhibit area. This accessible exhibit area features an exhibit honoring Sooke (L-112) a young orca who passed in 2012.
The museum is not a large one but is definitely worth a visit.
