If you only see one temple in Thailand, make it Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple. This unique and unconventional temple is Chalermchai Kositpipat, a renowned Thai artist’s offering to the Buddha. He financed and built the temple with his own money, and in contrast to your average golden Thai temple, this one is made of gleaming white with marble and mirrored glass in the construction. Bizarre murals, depicting sin, the afterlife, and Buddhist teachings are interspersed with drawings of Michael Jackson, Superman, and the Matrix, you have to cross a bridge filled with thousands of ghostly hands reaching out of a moat, and it is all very other worldly. While the interior is certainly interesting, perhaps the best views of the temple are from the outside, where it just sparkles and shines in the tropical sun. The tour buses roll in here throughout the day, so it is worth coming early in the morning, where you will have the magical temple mostly to yourself.
