How would you like to have lunch or dinner in a restaurant that occupies a bungalow built more than 100 years ago? What is now the Village at Mountain Sapphire Brewing Company in Sylva used to be the home of the McGuire family, who were among the first dentists in North Carolina. (Their descendants still practice here, and in fact live in a home that overlooks the restaurant and their old playrooms.).
The restaurant at Mountain Sapphire opened in 2010, and while the decor is snappy and smart, homage is paid to the history of the
place. If you come for lunch or dinner at The Village, you will dine in a setting where the oak and heart pine floors have been sitting in the original
bungalow since 1904. The courtyard that leads to the restaurant with its live tree frogs is also a venue for concerts, kids’ shows or other community events.
Besides the burgers, sandwiches and other typical bar food delights, the Mountain Sapphire Brewing Company is known for its pizza and flat breads. Special include $5 Express lunches just in case you happen to be passing through Sylva at the noon hour or close to it.
The Village restaurant is a sister establishment of the Sapphire Mountain Brewing Company in the town of Sapphire. And yes, there is a
distillery with the same name, founded of course, in the historic mining district of Sapphire in the lower mountains between Brevard and Highlands,
south of here. Try the Sapphire brew or any one of a dozen other local beers on the menu.
P.S. If you are in Sapphire, the restaurant there is at 50 Slicers Ave. Hours vary according to season.
