Riding on the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad
you’ll be surrounded by the tips of mountain peaks. The train travels high above the
headwaters of the Arkansas River Valley, through forests of pine and aspen and
high-country meadows. Sitting in the
engine car or the caboose adds spice to the 2 1/2 hour ride.
The drive to reach the train is special. Head up Hwy 24 from I-70 (exit 171 between Vail and Beaver Creek) through the tiny town of Minturn and you’ll be driving through some dramatic mountain scenery.
Before or after your ride, take time to look at the old buildings while walking around Leadville.
Reservations for the train, and especially for a seat in the engine car or the caboose, are recommended in the summer and fall.
