Historic stage stop and fun food

Blink and you could miss Tortilla Flat, €”the little town located near mile marker 213 on the Apache Trail (AZ 88). It’s only a restaurant, gift store, post office, ice cream shop and small museum, but you’ll definitely want to stop. In fact, for many, it’€™s the whole point of driving this historic stagecoach route.

The restaurant serves traditional fare like hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and “€œMexican grub.” You won’€™t have to wait long for your food, but while you do, take note of the dollar bills stapled to every square inch of the wall. No one knows how the practice started, but it’€™s estimated that more than $100,000 adorns the restaurant.

After your meal, head to the small museum located inside the one-time schoolhouse. Then, enjoy a scoop of ice cream in traditional flavors like chocolate. Or, be adventurous and try a scoop of prickly pear.
