This erstwhile old man’s pub turned chic eatery has been given a fresh and irresistibly British American twist by owner Sam Pearman. Food is big on British beef – whether sensational steaks cooked with precision or burgers that pack a punch.
Decor taps into the post Olympics zeitgeist and national eccentricity. Design details include a cheery Union flag, salvaged school chairs, a stuffed seagull (with a suspicious look) and chesterfield style leather benches. Live music every Thursday night enhances The Tavern’s new rock and roll edge.
This gastro pub – formerly known as The Royal Well Tavern – underwent a full refit in 2012. The menu mirrors the informal tone set by the new interiors but the commitment to seasonal produce remains. Sunday roasts are first rate, often including rare breeds, much like their superb sister restaurant, The Wheatsheaf.
Sam’s an attentive, charming frontman who’s struck that difficult balance between friendliness and courtesy. His approach to service permeates throughout his staff so neither do you feel pestered nor neglected. It’s no surprise, then, that he trained at Langans Brasserie in Mayfair.
The setting is handy too, just off the grand Royal Well Crescent, hosting Cheltenham bus station, and a two minute walk from the Promenade and Montpellier. Find them on Facebook for photos, news and views from their online community.
