Housed in a Neo-Renaissance palace at the northern end of Strossmayer Square is The Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Upstairs you’ll find the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters donated to the city by Bishop Strossmayer in 1884. The collection includes pieces by Tintoretto, Veronese, El Greco, various Flemish works and pieces by classic Croatian artists.
In the entrance hall there’s the Baska Tablet. Found on Krk Island this is one of the oldest stone inscriptions written in the Croatian glagolitic script.
Welcoming you out the front is a statue of Bishop Strossmayer by Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
