Some call it Oakland’s hippest neighborhood, though others would award that title to Uptown. Still, Temescal has held onto its locals-only, bohemian atmosphere with unusual boutiques, offbeat bars and chefs’ restaurants lined up along Telegraph Avenue. Don’t miss browsing the Temescal Alleys or the weekly farmers market held on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The densest concentration of cool businesses to check out is on Telegraph Ave. from 51st St. heading south, with pretty much everything petering out by the time you get down to 40th St. The most fun times to take a stroll are on weekend afternoons and evenings.
Directions: Temescal’s main strip is about a 10-minute walk northeast of the MacArthur BART station. From downtown Oakland, take AC Transit bus 1 or 1R northbound to the corner of Telegraph Ave. and 49th St. Street parking is metered.
