Spain’s Special Form of Musical Theatre

The 1850s were the early years of this new musical and theatrical art form that really took off and kept its popularity throughout the Belle Époque and beyond.

Today, theatergoers love a good zarzuela. This art form is something of mix of operetta and musical comedy with entirely Spanish stories, music, song, and dance.

Zarzuelas are often elaborate productions with singers with operatically trained voices.

This particular theater opened on October 10, 1856 to honor Queen Isabel II on her birthday.

Daily performances continue to unfold and are strongly recommended.
