Frank Lloyd Wright sure made his mark on Phoenix–in really odd ways. For one thing, he was hired to help design the Arizona Biltmore but somehow managed to get kicked off the project. His influence still remains, however, in the building blocks so recognizably his. So while you’re here, you might as well take a tour of the teaching studio he built in north Scottsdale. Called Taliesin West, the architect’s Arizona school and former winter home offers one of the best tours in town.
Opt for the 90-minute Insights tour. You’ll learn about Wright’s bad boy ways with women, his architectural philosophy, and you’ll get a glimpse of how well his ideas worked with the natural environment of the desert. During the summer, take the two-hour tour in the evening to avoid the heat. Reservations are recommended.
