Taipa Houses-Museum

See how the Macanese lived

To learn about Macau’s unique Macanese (Eurasian) heritage and see what life was like for Macanese families living on what was then remote Taipa Island, see the Taipa Houses-Museum, comprised of five colonial homes that once housed families in the early 1900s (only 3 are open to the public). The Macanese House, combining both European and Chinese architectural designs as a reflection of the families’ Eurasian heritage, contains living and dining quarters filled with period furniture and personal artifacts, while other former homes display Portuguese regional costumes and changing exhibits. Sadly, while the homes lining the banyan-shaded Praia once faced a sea filled with clipper ships, relentless land reclamation now gives a view of COTAI’s many resorts and casinos from the small but stately homes.
