This place is a major institution for surfing and water sports on the North Shore. Still in its original location from when it opened in 1965, Surf N Sea has evolved from just a surf shop into an all-in-one shop that has every bit of water gear you could ever want. It also offers surfing lessons, stand up paddling (SUP), snorkeling, kayaking, shark tours, fishing charters, and scuba diving. You can even arrange to get your PADI diving certification through them too. Have a look at their website for more information.
You’re probably thinking that the North Shore’s surf can get too big for you to enjoy most water sports, but Surf N Sea’s location is sheltered enough so that wave sizes will be appropriate for learning. However if you already know how to surf, they have a solid selection of boards to rent.
Before you hit the water, please, please, please talk to the guys (and gals) at Surf N Sea as well as the North Shore lifeguards—they are some of the most incredible watermen in the world—to get advice on currents, riptides, and the like. Regardless of how good of a surfer you may already be, Hawaiian waters are a completely different beast from what you might be used to and taking the time to gather information will make your life so much easier. Whatever you do, have a blast and be safe.
