The Striezelmarkt claims to be the oldest Christmas market in Germany (others do so, as well. But they aren’t, of course!). It started as a one-day market in 1434 to provide the citizens of Dresden with the meat for the Christmas meal after the pre-Christmas period of fasting – and is now not only one of the oldest Christmas markets, but one of the most popular ones: it attracts approximately 2.5 million visitors annually.
The 584th Dresden Striezelmarkt will open from 28th November to 24th December 2018 at Dresden Altmarkt square. The booths open from 10 am to 9 pm. The programme includes the Stollenfest (Stollen festival) on 8 December, named after the cake-like fruit bread that is eaten during the Christmas season.
