A 45-minute Batorama river tour around the historic island called La Grande Île is fun, informative, and a chance to rest your feet.
The bateau-mouche-style excursion boats are heated and air-conditioned, but if the weather’s fine, choose the open-air cruise. From May through September, you can hop aboard as late as 10 pm for a sunset tour along the Île River.
Pick up tickets at the Batorama shop at Place de la Cathédrale or buy them from an automatic terminal on the wharf near the departure pier near the Palais de Rohan. The riverboats leave every half hour beginning at 9:00 am, and individual audio guides chat away in English (and a choice of 11 other languages) through individual headphones. Kids get their own headset with stories that bring the sites to life.
Onboard you’ll have a waterside view of the Strasbourg Historical Museum, the Old Customs House, and the timbered buildings of the Finkwiller neighborhood. As you pass the Ponts Couverts and the Barrage Vauban, the audio will describe the now-damaged fortifications that were built during the reign of Louis XIV.
