What is a snowcoach? Simply put, it is a vehicle outfitted with huge tires, skis, or tracks for traveling on top of snow. Vans, mini-buses, and even large buses can get around with these winter adaptations on unplowed, but groomed roads.

In Yellowstone, snowcoaches provide the easiest way to tour in winter. A guide does the driving, while you sit back to watch bison lumbering down the road and the landscape seething steam from geothermal activity.

Several companies operate sightseeing snowcoaches from Mammoth Hot Springs, West Yellowstone, and Flagg Ranch mid-December to early March. Reservations are required for all of them. Most are day trips that go to Old Faithful or Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

For overnighting at Old Faithful Snow Lodge, you can package a snowcoach trip from Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel with your lodging. Make reservations 9 months in advance.
