The Shelburne Museum is a fun mix of traditional galleries and historic buildings, set on beautiful 45-acre grounds. The museum has a great collection of Americana, from quilts and folk art to toys and decoys. In the center of grounds sits the 220-foot Ticonderoga steamboat, which visitors can board and check out the ornate decorations, dining hall and engine room. Another unique exhibit contains over 7,000 hand-carved wooden circus pieces, accompanied by classic circus posters.
The museum’s historic buildings include a blacksmith shop, a jail, a print shop and a general store and apothecary. Depending on the time of year, visitors may be able to observe live exhibitions, such as blacksmiths operating the forge. While visiting an art museum may not sound like much fun to the kids, with all the outdoor attractions and interactive displays, the Shelburne makes for a great family outing. Check the museum’s website for the latest exhibitions and activities. In the summer there’s a concert series with well-known artists at a beautiful outdoor venue on the museum grounds.
