Schynige Platte (1967m, 6453ft) makes a great day trip from Interlaken and should definitely be on the itinerary for any fans of cog railways and big views.
The railway, which is 7km long, transports passengers in under an hour from Wilderswil (just south of Interlaken and reachable by train from Interlaken Ost station). The 19th-century train is usually a hit with kids and train buffs, but it’s the commanding views of the terrific trio (Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau) that steal the show once you’re reached Schynige Platte.
Great walks/hikes (well signposted) are possible from this point: our pick is the Panoramaweg, a 2½-hour circuit with dazzling views over Interlaken and the lakes that bookend her, plus there’s an Alpine Botanical Garden on the return segment.
The Swiss Travel Pass allows passengers half-price fares.
