The pretty-as-a-picture aspect of Schwyz, capital of the canton of the same name and ringed by starkly stunning mountains, comes into stark relief on sunny spring days, when cherry blossoms create a riot of pink loveliness and the town’s historical buildings pose proud as peacocks, ready for their close-up.
The town is known for its repository of Swiss historical documents and objects, so trips to the recently refurbished Forum of Swiss History and Museum of Swiss Charters are a must.
The town center’s Hauptplatz is one of the country’s finest squares, with its strikingly painted Rathaus and elegant baroque church dominating the space. Other notable buildings in Schwyz include the Ital Reding Estate, which features the fairy-tale Ital Reding House, which is also a museum (open from May to the end of October) and features splendid interior details.
