Some of Switzerland’s most jaw-dropping views are here, at the 2970m (9745ft) Skyline viewing platform at Piz Gloria, where a 360-degree vantage point allows you in inhale the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in style, and around 200 other impressive peaks, including Mt Blanc and Titlis if conditions are prime. And speaking of style, if you like a dash of cinematic espionage, this was the scene of James Bond’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service back in the late 1960s. Today you can visit the entertaining and interactive Bond World 007 exhibition with your cable car ticket.
Ski fiends should note that there’s a 15km-long (9.32mi) descent to Lauterbrunnen known as Inferno — it’s definitely one for confident, experienced skiers only.
The cableway to Schilthorn departs from Stechelberg, stopping at Gimmelwald, Mürren and Birg in that order. Birg, at 2677m (8783ft) is spectacular in its own right, with great views, a Skyline Walk and (from July 2016) a Thrill Walk. There’s also a popular bistro, with big views to accompany the menu.
