Protruding more than 20m from the waters of Lake Uri, the Schillerstein (Schiller Stone) is an obelisk-like rock boulder that catches the eye and the imagination, thanks in part to its association with the German playwright Friedrich Schiller, who did so much to expand the all-important myth of Wilhelm Tell (William Tell), with his drama of the same name (1804).

The inauguration of the Schillerstein took place on October 21, 1860, the 100th anniversary of Schiller’s birth. The stone is inscribed with the following message: To the Singer of Tell/F. Schiller/The Founding Cantons/1859.
