Preserving Sanibel

The non-profit Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation is responsible for raising funds to buy up much of the islands’ environmentally sensitive lands for preservation – some 30 tracts in all to date.

It educates and informs visitors about that environment at its Nature Center. Trails travel through uplands habitat and along the freshwater Sanibel River where alligators, river otters, raccoons, bobcats, and myriad birds live.

An observation tower gives a sweeping view of the campus, which holds a butterfly garden, native plant nursery, and a visitors facility with touch tank and other exhibits.

SCCF hosts a variety of special programs throughout the year, including an informative sea turtle beach walk and nature cruise.
