Sault Ste Marie locks

Today the Soo, and its sister city Sault Ste.Marie, Michigan, can boast they lie on the world’s busiest canal (by tonnage), and this is all possible thanks to the S.S.Marie locks which provided the final link in an all-Canadian navigation route between the St. Lawrence River and Lake Superior.

These were Canada’s first electrically powered locks, solved the 6.4m (21 foot) difference between the two lake levels and conquered the rapids too. Smaller recreational boats now use the Canadian locks and large commercial vessels take the USA locks. You can walk alongside the Canadian side or take a boat tour on the American side.
