Sanur is popular with Europeans and with families wanting the feel of Kuta, but without the sophistication or frenetic pace, and calmer waters in which to swim. A  stroll along the boardwalk running the length of the beach allows glimpses of lush hotel gardens interspersed with small, reasonably priced restaurants and market stalls where bargaining is still expected and enjoyed.

There are not as many chain hotels here and, while there are plenty of good restaurants, the more expensive upmarket offerings are yet to proliferate. Intimate bars take the place of flashy nightclubs and Sanur retains a more sedate, village feel, despite the introduction of some swanky new upmarket hotel brands in recent years.
