A Foothold of St. Francis of Assisi

Carlos III commissioned this Neoclassical and Baroque church, which took from 1761 to 1776 to complete.

It stands over what was once a Franciscan convent that was torn down in order to build a larger church.

The convent is fabled to have been started by St. Francis of Assisi himself in AD 1217.

Inside you will find one of Goya’s ornate domes and his painting of San Bernardino as well as work by Zurbarán (1598-1664).
