Local artists, educators and community members, envisioned the free, multi-purpose Salina Art Center as a gallery and education center with a hands-on activities area. A nationally recognized arts institution, the Center displays art works from this region, the United States and across the globe, while encompassing three buildings. Showcasing contemporary and international films, the Art Center Cinema (admission charge) lies about a block away from the Art Center, offering movies that begin on Friday evening and run through the following Thursday. A downtown warehouse building also facilitates extended ‘organic and malleable’ artist residencies. Educational opportunities include Second Sundays in September through April – Free Monthly Artmaking Workshops for Families – and the Artist Exchange program, in which three artists serve as one-on-one mentors to three ‘students’ who are selected through an application process and produce month-long exhibitions.
