You can still get your kicks on Route 66! It’s a bit disjointed and difficult to follow at times but worth the effort. The easiest point to pick up Route 66 from Phoenix and Scottsdale is Flagstaff. From there, you can head east or west.
If you choose to go east, highlights include the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook and Standing’ on the Corner Park in Winslow. Further east, stop at the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert.
If you choose to go west instead, don’t miss the shops in Williams and Seligman. The Historic Route 66 Museum in Kingman is also a must. Be sure to end your trip by feeding the burros in Oatman. They roam the streets looking for handouts.
Hungry? Take a break from the road with a cherry Coke from Twisters Soda Fountain in Williams, a hamburger at The Roadkill Café in Seligman or a caramel-flavored root beer from Mr. D’z in Kingman.
