There are three state parks near the Dells, and 244-acre Rocky Arbor State Park is the closest. Just two minutes north from the intersection of the Strip and downtown Dells on Highway 12/16, it offers 89 wooded campsites, a playground with picnic facilities and a one-mile, self-guided nature trail.
The nature trail, while admittedly short, passes by numerous 500-million-year-old Cambrian sandstone formations from which trees sprout. These are the very ones that made the Dells famous. Hence the name Rocky Arbor State Park. One in particular is especially notable; you can figure out which one for yourself.
Take the one-mile stroll and marvel at these ancient sandstone formations (you can even touch them if you’d like). Then imagine what the Dells was like before giant Trojan horses and water slides moved in. Or just head over for a nice picnic in the woods, or a quiet night sleeping in a pine forest.
