Surrounded by residential neighborhoods filled with classic Northern California bungalows, Rockridge has certainly come up in the world. The district’s main drag stretches along College Ave., passing through the equally genteel Elmwood neighborhood north of Claremont Ave. before reaching the Berkeley border. Come here for a lazy afternoon of shopping or a good lunch or dinner.
Pedestrian-friendly College Ave. is thronged with UC Berkeley alumni, well-to-do tech types, and a diverse mix of families with young kids in deluxe strollers that crowd the sidewalks. Don’t miss ambling around the Rockridge Market Hall, a cornucopia of tempting Californian and imported foodie delights.
Directions: From Rockridge BART station, walk south or north along College Ave. Parking on College Ave. is metered; residential side-street parking in usually free, but limited. For more Transportation details see Oakland and Around (in the yellow bar).
