Rae’s has been a landmark at Wategos Beach at the base of Cape Byron and a regular stopover for everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Kate Winslet ever since it opened its Javanese teak doors in the 1960s.
With their north-facing terraces open to the sea breeze, the seven suite-villas, redecorated in 2017, are quintessentially “Byron” and at the same time exude a bohemian opulence. Think Moroccan alcoves, Balinese four-poster beds, whitewashed Greek walls and Turkish mother-of-pearl tiles (the latter in the steam rooms of the award-winning day spa).
Bring your surfboards, swim in the secluded pool or take a run up to the nearby lighthouse. And make time for lunch or dinner at the open-air restaurant, also refurbished in 2017, where you can smell the sea breeze and where the late evening sun glints off the wine glasses. Just remember that at Rae’s, it’s all about romance.
