Vast light filled spaces make the Queensland Art Gallery one of Australia’s most attractive galleries, as well as one of its most respected. It is a major player in
the Australian art world, attracting blockbuster exhibitions of works by the likes of Renoir, Picasso, and van Gogh, and showcasing modern Australian artists.
It also has an impressive collection of Aboriginal art, and every three years (next in 2018/19) hosts the wonderful Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, which runs for around five months.
There are free tours that take around 30 to 40 minutes. Tours of the collection highlights are held daily at 11am and 2pm.
Also part of the Queensland Cultural Precinct, its sister gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) is newer but equally stunning. Water features and outdoor sculptures, and riverside pathways link the two galleries. Make sure you do them both! There is also a dedicated Children’s Art Centre, as part of the precinct, with fun activities for young art lovers.
