Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, not far from Kahului Airport, is the place to go if you’ve forgotten to pack your swimsuit or cell phone charger, if you need to get your nails done or buy new luggage. Maui’s largest mall is an an enclosed modern shopping complex that would look at home in California or Connecticut.

Two Macy’s and Sears stores anchor more than 100 shops, restaurants and a supermarket in the spacious mall. A children’s play area and stroller rental ease shopping for families with young children. Free wireless Internet means you can check e-mail. Hula and music performances and a six-screen movie theater with the latest releases means you can spend the time of day. A history museum, author readings and numerous restaurants and a food court make this a place to come for more than shopping.

A statue of dignified Queen Ka‘ahumanu stands in modern dress near the entrance overlooking a pond. The favorite wife of Kamehameha I, she abolished the ancient kapu system and would probably approve of the modern mall.
