Once a major military base, now the Presidio is one of San Francisco’s most adored green spaces, especially for families. 1491 acres of greenery cuddle up to the Golden Gate Bridge and the ocean and make this an ideal place to hike, bike, explore and rest.
The two tree hugged playgrounds (Julius Kahn Playground and Mountain Lake Park) reek of eucalyptus, which brings a dash of calm to energetic children. And while not the most exceptional structures, the setting makes even the most urban children more interested in playing with pine cones than swings.
Take your kids on a hike by using the Kids On Trails guides. Download the guides from their website. Then explore the area with your children—note that trails are geared towards 5-10 year old kids. These guides inspire kids to be on the lookout for a variety of natural highlights, educating them about the animals that live in the park.
On a rainy day, head to the bowling alley to knock down pins or play arcade games. There are a number of restaurants, but the most enticing option is the weekly Off the Grid festival, where dozens of food trucks descend on this green space.
Other spots to check out include the Walt Disney Museum, House of Air Trampoline Park, and Batter’s Box SF. Annual events like the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, the Hawaiian Festival, Shakespeare in the Park and Film in the Fog are worth checking out.
In the park, the Inn at the Presidio caters to families by offering spacious rooms with a bugle boy theme. In the heart of San Francisco’s most stunning green space, and walking distance to the beach, bike trails and more, this hotel provides a unique insider’s view to the San Francisco experience.
