Much of Florence’s city walls were demolished in the 19th century, but the Porta Romana, at the end of Via Romana, remains. From the gate, a section of the wall shoots north along Viale Francesco Petrarca. Following this section, on the inside of the wall (now a parking lot), you’ll find access to stairs that lead to the top of the gate.
Porta San Frediano, another surviving city gate, is about one kilometer north.
