Where the ancients left their marks

Carved by Native American and Hispanic settlers 400 to 700 years ago, the petroglyph here make up one of the largest collections of carved rock art in North America. Explore the park via one or more of several trails, including the widely accessible Boca Negra Canyon trail and the longer, 2.2-mile, Rinconada Canyon trail. Located on the western edge of the monument (and accessible via a different route than that to the main park), the Volcanoes Day Use Area offers miles of scenic hiking around and up volcanic cinder cones.
