A proclamation at the site states “We claim this ground in remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001.We will never forget.”
Just outside the Pentagon, this memorial honors the 184 people who died here when terrorists crashed an airplane into the building on September 11, 2001. You can still see where the plane hit, as the stone that repaired the damage is a slightly different color than the original.
The memorial is a collection of simple cantilevered benches, one for each victim, rising from the gravel surface. Those facing the Pentagon represent the people who died on the plane (so that viewers will read their names on the end of the bench, and look beyond to the sky), those facing away, the people working in the building.
Lighted fountains run under each bench, creating a contemplative mood, and trees are planted as if to signify ongoing life.
