The small coastal village of Pemutaran is located around an hour west of Lovina on the north coast of Bali.  A shallow coral reef not far offshore, and high biodiversity, makes this a popular area for diving.

It has become even more so since the commencement of the Bio-Rock project (http://biorockbali.webs.com/ ) in 2000, a project which involved installing 300 metres of coral nursery structure to grow an artificial coral reef over a 2 hectare area. The project is designed to create coral species that are resilient and resistant to the environmental stress caused by global warming and to replace those damaged by harmful fishing practices in the past.
