The Paragon Cafe can rightly wear
the mantle of icon, having occupied the same spot on Katoomba Street since
1916.
The café was established by Zachariah Simos (who emigrated to Australia from the Greek island of Kythera, like many others café owners who set up business in Katoomba).
Simos refitted the café in 1925 in Art Deco style and a decade later added a small banquet hall and blue room bar at the rear.
While the Paragon’s fortunes have ebbed and flowed over the decades it is now flourishing under new owner Robyn Parker, who used to visit the café as a child and loved it.
Robyn has kick-started the former chocolate making business and
sells a delectable range of treats in heritage packaging that she copied from
original boxes.
Robyn also run vintage movie nights in the cocktail bar (the former blue room), tango nights and even holds Bohemian evenings where music and life drawing are on the same bill.
