For a taste of Indian culture, head to Pahurat, especially if you’re in the market for textiles. The shops here sell colorful and often sparkly cloth by the meter. One of the best places is Madan Handicraft: check our separate entry on that. Also here are bed coverings, pillow cases, scarves, sandals, trinkets, crafty items, and icons of your favorite Hindu gods and goddesses.

The area has many excellent restaurants such as Royal India and good places for Indian sweets. There are small shops that sell spices and everything you need to make killer masala tea. On our last visit we found a great little shop selling cassettes and CDs of Thai and Indian sacred music. There are interesting shrines and temples in the neighborhood, too.
