Another quiet coastal town, Padang Bai is also a harbour that serves as a port for ferries to Lombok, the Gili Islands and the Lesser Sunda Islands. It boasts several white sand beaches and is very popular for diving and snorkelling, with many operators from which to choose. Blue Lagoon at the north end is particularly popular with families.
On a hill overlooking the village is the unassuming Silayukti temple. While over 1000 years old, this little known temple has been extensively rebuilt, featuring open spaces to accommodate worshippers and ornately crafted gates and shrines. There is no entry fee but a sarong must be worn inside. This can be hired or purchased from nearby market stalls (around Rp5,000 to rent).
