The best Bahamas vacations combine the bustle of Nassau/Paradise Island with the time-stopped, utter relaxation of the Out Islands.
That is why I have included overviews of most of the major Out Islands. For each of the Out Islands I’ve listed, I have included air carriers and travel time within the listing.
Sea transport is the slower way to go, but also more appropriate for visiting these salty islands. If you have LOTS of time, consider hopping aboard the mailboat at Potter’s Cay, along with supplies headed to the Out Islands.
Fast ferries also depart from Potter’s Cay for several of the Out Islands on a set schedule that ranges in frequency from once a week to twice daily, depending on demand and distance.
Routes include round-trip from Nassau to Abaco (Sandy Point), Andros (Fresh Creek, Morgan’s Bluff), Eleuthera (Harbour Island, North Eleuthera, Current, and Governor’s Harbour), and Exuma (George Town). (Powerboat Adventures does daytrips from Nassau to Exuma Cays.)
Some ferries transport vehicles as well as passengers. Most trips take two to three hours. Visit the Bahamas Ferry Services Web site for fares and current schedules, which change seasonally.
