If you’re taking a Duck tour for the scenery, stick with the Original Wisconsin Ducks. It offers the best Duck route in town.
The 60-minute tour begins in a patch of forest near the Wisconsin River, first passing discarded concrete statues that once graced the Chicago Board of Trade. (Odd, but interesting.) Then you dip into cool, leafy Fern Dell, with its 27 species of ferns, before splashing into the river. Your guide will point out interesting rock formations, including Pulpit Rock and Hawk’s Beak.
The rumbly Duck then hauls itself onto land again before splashing down into Lake Delton. Here, you’ll get prime views of the spots where the lake emptied into the Wisconsin River and washed over the dam in 2008’s devastating tragedy. Back on land, you’ll wind through gorgeous, dell-studded terrain before roaring up and down Roller Coaster and Suicide Hills.
Like many Dells attractions, this one features campy jokes dished out by the guides — who also pass out postcards and booklets in exchange for tip money.
The Original Wisconsin Ducks partners with Dells Boat Tours. There are discounts available if you purchase tickets for two or more of the company’s attractions.
